Sue Kim masterfully repurposes everyday objects, transforming them based on spatial dynamics into textured, colorful expressions.

Rooted in Korean cultural context, her art introspects both historical remnants and contemporary shifts.

Kim explores themes of absence and human interaction, using spatial elements like voids to challenge perceptions. Her layered works, such as pagodas constructed from everyday objects, highlight intersections of desires and societal dynamics. Through iron collages or perspective-shifting sculptures, Kim’s art prompts audiences to reevaluate society. Her goal: to dismantle dichotomous views, fostering deeper contemplation of societal placement.

Beginning with a solid block, the artwork evolves, guided by the square root of 2, to an empty wall. The expanding hole, a metaphor for duality, blurs distinctions between what’s present and absent, challenging the perceptions of foreground and background. The pieces underscore the transformative passages between dimensions, emphasizing unity in duality with at its core, the ‘between’ concept which champions duality, urging viewers to transcend binary perspectives and appreciate its nuances.
